EIR - Final reflection

Taking this module really make me wanna use the internet more often. Before taking module i wasn't really active in facebook or in twitter, however after taking up this module i started using facebook and twitter more often as i using all this application enable me to express myself and at the same time know what my other friends are doing too. Not only i am able to understand my friends more, i am also able to make more friends through this applications.

Before taking up this module, having to do research to me is like being in a small room, i have limited knowledge on the kind of search engine. However after taking up this module i learn that there are so many things that i don't know its like i am being open up to a new world. I didn't know that there are so many other kinds of search engine and many other ways that i can do research.

As a poly and a engineering student that will be times that i have to do a fair amount of research, after taking up this module i realize there are to many ways to do a research. If i could turn back time i could choose my first CDS again, i would choose EIR first. Because if i have chosen EIR first, it would have been easier for my to do research. I would have know how to use the wiki, metaclawer and also the yahoo directory. Even those invisible website enable me to find relevant topic easily. I can even use a forum discussion to retrieve certain information from other people who might be a expert. haha.

In EIR, we not only how to use various kind of research techniques, we also do other fun activity such as going to SecondLife and making friends with students from other country. Hence being in EIR, have bring me out of the small room and open me up to the world of doing research.

EIR Tutorial 5 & 6 Reflection
1. What is the significant learning experience for you working in a group?

For me working in a group is a way to work on teamwork and also learn how to be a team player. We can also share our knowledge with each other and put all the information together. Working in a team also allow us to solve any problem or issues that arises together easily. Working in a group enable members so share suggestion,ideas, solutions and proposals with our members. With this members are able to help each other.

 Hence working in a group is fun and at the same time enable the work to be done faster.

2. As an individual contributor, what have you gained from this experience?


I learn how to work better in a team. I learn how to be a team player and also learn more about teamwork. At the same time i am understand my group mate better as we have to communicate a lot. Through communicating i am understand them and also know their point of view towards the topic.

3. What is the one most challenging experience you had?

The most challenging experience i had was to ensure that everyone have their part to do and everything is fair. Because some of the group mate would tend to want to post everything to ensure that they would be able to get the marks. Hence in order to prevent all this from happening, I compiled all the researched collected by my team mates and reorganized it. After that i ensure everyone have a part to post on the wiki.

4. What advice would you give to the next batch wiki groups as they start a similar project?

I would like to advise them to get all their group mate contacts and start the project early. Because some of your group mate would tend to drag the project and as you drag other assignment would starting piling up. So start doing your project early not when the deadline is near!!!

5. Would you use Wiki for research in your own Diplomas? Why?

Yes i would use wiki for research in my own Diplomas as there are a lot of information being posted up in wiki. And the information in wiki is much more summarized as student would tend to help summarized it so that the information wouldn't be so long winded. And having that it would save me a lot of time as all the information are being compiled and summarize into one page.

EIR Tutorial 3 & 4 Reflection

How has Twitter (micro-blogging) enhanced your learning of EIR?

Twitter is an online application which is more like a micro blog, that enable people to do social networking  through the computer or cell phone. The twitter enable users to tell their friends or their followers to know what they are doing. Twitter have enhanced my learning of EIR because twitter not only enable me to tell people what i am doing or expressing myself, it also allow me to ask people questions which allow me to gather more knowledge.

However twitter can only type up to 140 words, there are also scientific research that twitter is good. Due to the word limit, twitter users are able to be more creative as they have to summarize what they wanna write within the word limit.

I feel that twitter would be better than having a blog. Because in some extend twitter is less time-consuming, because you get write what you think on the spot rather than going home and think what you have done on that day and write. In addition, followers can reply what you post right away. Hence twitter having a micro blog is much better than a blog spot.

How can you use Twitter and Blogspot for research purposes?

By using twitter we are able to post a question and wait for people to reply. With twitter we are able to get the information faster than blogspot. The users can also post up picture that enable us have a clearer look on the research. Even though with blogspot users are shows more elaborate essays on our research topic it would be more time consuming than twitter. Hence TWITTER RULES!!!

EIR 8&9 :DREAM HOLIDAY
For this practical, we were told to update on our blog with pictures and evaluation criteria of travel websites with regards to our ‘Dream Holiday’. For my dream holiday, I would love to go to Australia and go to the largest city in Australia which is Sydney and also go to places such as the Kangaroo Island and Port Lincoln.



 
I have chosen Australia as my dream holiday destination as Australia is a very big country and there is so many places that we can explore! By using the search engine Google I manage to find a very reliable website, http://www.australia.com/index.aspx which gives us a ton of information of where we can go and all. It is more like an organizational tourism website which advocated the landmarks, special events and accommodation within Australia.      
                                                                                                         
After using evaluation criteria for web resources, I am able to rate this website base on the coverage, accuracy and purpose. This website is an official tourism web page for tourists after all; hence its aim is to promote Australia as one of the most exciting country to be visit. 
 
The website http://www.australia.com/index.aspx is an organization website that enables tourists to get interesting about Australia such as history, culture and facts. This website also provided us information on what we can do too, for example there is a link that tells you what you can do at Sydney's Great Coastal Walk - Barrenjoey to Royal National Park for 8days! They also provide some information on where we should go based on our interest. For example I love excitement hence I can go and dive with the great white sharks in port lncoln,SA!

Since this website is not only an official website but also an organization website. This website will provide highly accurate information. This website also have a coverage on accommodation, landmarks and etc which enable tourist to navigate around one of the biggest city in this country Sydney easily.


I chose to go Australia because there are so many places in country I would love to explore I would love to go to Sydney because I want to explore places such as Avalon, the Narrabeen lakes and head to clovelly. I would also like to go to Port Lincoln to face one of the sea’s most ruthless killers, the great white shark. With all this exciting things that can be done in Australia, Australia is definitely my dream holiday.

EIR 7: Citizen Journalism and Stomp

For Lesson 7 we were ask to read an article on "Citizen Journalism" and we ask to use one word to describe what Citizen journalism mean to you. However, i forgot what's the word i pick haha. After that we form a group of 5 people.

We chose purpose as one of our evaluation criteria, the purpose this website is to expose news which is not reported in the newspapers. And for coverage, this website covers mostly on embarrassing or grueling stories ranging from public nudity to street fighting. Sometimes it would also covers news from other country such as china. We chose this cteria because there was also much to talk about the information presented in this website, because everyone would be interested in little gossip about Singaporeans. In terms of accuracy, the information given in this website were very accurate and reliable in explaining what is happening in the Singapore. Though the stories may or may not have been reported in the news, in this website people can comment on the news and the photos of the ongoing scene. We also chose this criteria since there was much to talk about, like the two criterion above.

If I were ask create my own version of “Stomp” in relation to my research topic, I would apply Citizen Journalism by getting users to send me their stories to posted it up because if users are to posted the story up by themselves, there would be some who would tend to post stories that are totally untrue and also i would allow them to show photos about the effects and causes of endangered species. I would also ensure that the users can post up their comments so that they could express on how they feel about the stories and also to help the community learn from the user's experience and also include mood statistics like in Stomp.com, ranging from "Happy" to "Concerned".

EIR Lesson 6: Invisible Web

For lesson 6 we were asked to do research using the invisible web database.  The invisible web databases were basically search engines which are not open to the general public like Google, they are more for students from temasek polytechnic.

It wouldn't be good to take the invisible web database as a Google search engine. However using the invisible website would be as ineffective as the subject directories which would provide very little resources using my search query and list out a list of irrelevant sources. Hence it won't be as good as search engine such as Google. Moreover using Google would saves us the trouble of logging in and out unlike private website.


Sharing information on wiki would enhance the spirit of sharing. It has also given me a lot of detailed knowledge on the topic.

EIR Lesson 5: Site Feeding and Blog Reflections

In today's lesson we were asked to use the search Meta search engine. The benefits of using different search facilities to search for resources would give us different kind of results and information related to our topic. Some of the information would be relevant while others are not. Search facilities such as Meta search engine would also have additional filter setting to filter out explicit materials. It would also prefer us to other search engines for more relevant informations and with the recent search function we would be able to obtain the most recent information.


To be frank i didn't even know about what is site feeds until this lesson. Having site feeds is great, it is much easy to read after having site feeds. I feel that it would be good to have a site feeds in my blog because it is pretty cool to have one as it is a machine-readable representation of your blog that can be picked up and displayed on other web sites and information aggregation tools.

The wiki research page gave me a lot of information on my research topic. I was surprise that i am able to get more information from what i already have. It is very interesting to have someone else sharing information through this website rather than sharing it through the forum. The wiki is a really good place to get information and at the same time posting up information for other people.


After reading some of the information, i was thinking hard on what i other information on my topic i could post. Because for my topic on the causes and effects of endangered species there are information on their history and how to aid them. And decided to post information on the organisation that actually helped the endangered species.So ya this is what i did for my wiki.
